Categories Bingo – Adult Cognition & Group Therapy Game
Bring energy, engagement, and meaningful cognitive practice to your adult rehab groups with Categories Bingo, a no‑prep, large‑print word‑retrieval game designed specifically for SNFs, memory care, outpatient neuro rehab, and hospital-based group therapy. This resource blends structured semantic retrieval with the fun and familiarity of Bingo, making it an ideal activity for adults with cognitive‑linguistic needs, aphasia, mild dementia, or anyone who benefits from category-based naming tasks.
This set includes 10 different large-print Bingo boards, each featuring a 5×5 layout with a free center square. Every board is unique, allowing you to run multiple sessions without repetition and keeping your groups fresh, challenging, and enjoyable. As your players name items in each category out loud, they target word retrieval, semantic organization, verbal fluency, auditory comprehension, and group turn-taking — all in a motivating, social format.
What’s Included
Your download contains everything you need for immediate use:
10 large-print player boards (5×5 with free center) — each one different
Leader Guide explaining how to play, why it works, and how to grade difficulty
Category Sample Answers Sheet with quick examples for every category
Print & Digital formats for flexible use in person or on-screen
Reusable design — laminate or use dry-erase sleeves for repeated sessions
How to Play
Categories Bingo is intentionally simple, making it perfect for mixed-level groups.
Option 1: Caller Style
You call out a category (e.g., “Name 3 fruits”). Any player who has that square marks it after naming 3 items.
Option 2: Solo-Board Style
Each player works independently, naming items in the categories on their own board to mark squares.
Winning
First to complete a row, column, or diagonal calls “Bingo!” Continue play for a full-card challenge.
Skill Targets You Can Document
Perfect for progress notes, insurance justification, and skilled intervention documentation:
Word retrieval & confrontation naming
Semantic/category organization
Verbal fluency (items per category)
Auditory comprehension
Group turn-taking & participation
Cognitive-linguistic flexibility
Easy to Grade Up or Down
Adapt the challenge level to meet each patient where they are:
Easier: accept 1–2 items, offer choices (“Is an apple a fruit or a tool?”), or give the first letter
Harder: require 5 items, add a time limit, or prohibit repeated answers within the group
Why It Works
Category naming is one of the most effective and research-supported ways to strengthen:
lexical access
semantic networks
cognitive flexibility
expressive language
group communication skills
The Bingo format adds motivation, structure, and social interaction — ideal for adult rehab settings where engagement can make or break a session.
